盛岡城は、岩手県盛岡市にある盛岡藩南部氏の居城跡。
国の史跡に指定されています。
慶長2年（1597年）に、盛岡藩初代藩主の南部信直が嫡子利直を総奉行として築城を始めました。
豊臣家重臣の浅野長政の助言のもと、北上川と中津川の合流点の丘陵に築城した連郭式平山城であります。
36年後の寛永10年（1633年）に3代藩主南部重直が入城、以後、盛岡藩庁として明治維新を迎えました。
盛岡城の石垣は、城の周辺で産出した花崗岩によって築かれています。
石垣は多様な積み方が見られ、「野面積」「乱積」「布積」など、その美しさから東北三名城に数えられています。
盛岡城は、明治5年（1872年）に陸軍省所管となって以降は建物の大半が取り壊され城内は荒廃してしまいます。
その後、明治39年（1906年）に都市公園として整備され、市民の憩いの場として親しまれてきました。
平成18年（2006年）には開園100周年を記念して「盛岡城跡公園」として生まれ変わります。
この年、同時に日本100名城と日本の歴史公園100選に選定されました。

Morioka Castle is the residence of the Nanbu clan of the Morioka domain located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture.
It is designated as a national historic site.
The construction of the castle began in 1597 by Nanbu Nobunao, the first lord of the Morioka Domain, with his heir, Toshinao, as the general magistrate.
This castle was built on a hill at the confluence of Kitakami river and Nakatsu river under the advice of Asano Nagamasa, senior vassal of the Toyotomi clan.
36 years later, In 1633, Shigenao Nanbu, the third lord of the domain, entered the castle, and since then it continued as a domain office until the Meiji Restoration.
The stone walls of Morioka Castle were built of granite produced in the vicinity of the castle.
The stonewalls are piled in a variety of ways, such as “Nosemzumi,” “Ranzumi,” and “Nunoizumi,” and are considered one of the three most famous castles in Tohoku because of their beauty.
After Morioka Castle was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of War in 1872, most of the buildings were demolished and the castle fell into disrepair.
Morioka Castle was later developed into a city park in 1906, and has been a popular place for citizens to relax.
In 2006, the park was reborn as “Morioka Castle Ruins Park” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its opening.
In that year, the park was simultaneously selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan and one of the 100 best historical parks in Japan.
